Shes the woman that wrote Grit.. And she gave the most wonderful senior exit speech Ive ever heard. You care about them. Anson: And you speak to a parent, you know, theyre doing the same thing. And I was thinking, this is incredible, because for years I tried to save everyone. Another buzzer goes off, they sprint to the water and then another buzzer goes off 30 seconds later, theyre done with their water break. Now obviously I need verbal leaders. So please dont think in firing them youre not doing them a positive service. And so I wish there were ways for me to sort out their character before I brought them in because that would have a huge impact on the kids we would end up offering scholarship money to. But when you talk to your mom youre claiming that you are, so like, you know, Mom, I cant believe it, you know, Im kicking everyones rear end in practice, and Im just not given a chance at the game. And even if its delusional I still wont touch it. And I know all you chickenshits are afraid to open your mouth, but Im going to need some of you to open your friggin mouths because we cant have a bloody, you know, committee meeting in the middle of a freaking game to solve our damn problem. So we have these more formal reviews basically 3 times a year. Melissa: Oh, I love that. Our core values are our character. I mean, whats amazing to me is the lack of confidence in so many extraordinary women Ive trained. But the amount of energy it required was overwhelming. And I learned about this when I was working for Franklin Covey. He says one factor is 12 Core Values. So anyway, so here is one experiment I tried 1 year. Thats my evaluation of whether or not theyre responding to anything Im telling them. Melissa: So you talked a lot about trial and error. I mean, hes incredibly demanding and yet you can feel his love for you. But through this love, love of family, love of neighborhood, love of community, love of the people that work for you and the people you serve, the customers, because hes also a free enterprise, this unbelievable man, Arthur Blank is. But the thing I learned most from him was how he would calmly sit there and listen to, you know, aggressive self-righteousness and not indict the person with his self-righteous opinion. Melissa: So Ive read a lot about you and your teams core values, which I am a huge believer in core values. And most of what we do in our environment is construct confidence. In 1999, I was invited to lecture on athletic excellence in a freshman honors seminar on campus. And every one of our players, basically, as peer evaluation, evaluates every kid in the program. Movies. The coach hates me. Theyre just whining and whining about everything under the sun. They sprint to the next thing theyre doing. And when they dont sign a pro contract its not because I havent told them the areas where they have fallen. Some are much more important than others, and we make very clear which ones are. And Im thinking great, well have all these core values. But if we started having all of these, you know, kids take the, you know, Angela Duckworth grit test or, you know, some sort of, you know, psychological profile or take my core value test, wed lose them, and the word would get out that, you know, thats how were evaluating them, and it would kill us. I remember how excited everyone was, and how impressed we all were when Coach Dorrance shared his 12 Core Values. And for us to see whats working all we have to do is to go to our test.
